Softwood pulp provides good runnability and excellent strength properties for board grades.

Hardwood pulp gives good surface properties for board grades. Hardwood grades consist of birch and eucalyptus pulps. Birch fibres provide an excellent combination of structure and strength properties. Good formation and optical properties can be realised by using eucalyptus fibres.

All pulps in the Botnia portfolio are certified to meet all of the cleanliness requirements for board.

Hardwood grades consist of birch and eucalyptus pulps. Hardwood pulps provide good properties for fine papers, with an excellent combination of optical and strength properties as well as high smoothness.

BCTMP will provide higher bulk, opacity and stiffness compared to chemical pulp in fine papers.

The role of softwood is mainly to provide good runnability, dewatering and excellent strength properties for magazine papers.

In magazine papers BCTMP will provide higher bulk and stiffness compared to softwood pulp. Higher brightness, bulk and smoothness will be achieved when mechanical pulp is replaced by BCTMP.

The range of softwood pulps includes thin walled fibres with fast refinability, and coarse and long fibres with good reinforcement potential.

Hardwood grades consist of birch and eucalyptus pulps. Birch fibres provide good strength and surface properties. Eucalyptus fibres provide good bulk, due to the rigidity of the fibre. The high fibre number gives good formation and surface properties, softness and uniform pore size distribution.
 
The BCTMP portfolio consists of a wide range of freeness levels. BCTMP will improve the bulk, stiffness and opacity of various paper products compared to chemical pulp.

The role of softwood in tissue is to provide sufficient strength to the base sheet throughout the process. The ideal softwood fibre for tissue requires a minimum amount of refining energy to reach the desired strength level in order to minimise generation of fines and maximise dewatering properties and bulk.

The role of hardwood in tissue is mainly to provide softness and smoothness. The high fibre number provides high smoothness. Slow refinability, low initial tensile strength and low stiffness provide excellent softness.

Due to its excellent wet resilience, BCTMP can improve the absorption capacity of industrial and household towels. BCTMP can also be used in toilet, hanky and facial grades for bulk improvement.
