Botnia Pulp

Metsä Fibre is a leading market pulp supplier. Our portfolio of Botnia pulps is the broadest in the world, comprising all main pulp grades including Softwood, Hardwood and High Yield (BCTMP) Pulps.

Botnia Softwood Pulp

Sustainably grown pine forest Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft Pulp (NBSK) is commonly used in the production of most paper, paperboard and tissue products. Softwood pulp brings strength to the end product, as well as runnability and excellent dewatering properties to the production process. Metsä produces high-quality softwood pulp under the Botnia brand at its pulp mills in Äänekoski, Kemi, Joutseno, Rauma and Husum.

Botnia Softwood Pulps consist of high-quality Nordic pine (pinus silvestris) and spruce (picea abies) sustainably sourced and felled by Metsä Forest. All of the wood raw materials are 100% traceable to their source. Your Metsä Fibre contact would be more than happy to help you select the bleached softwood kraft pulp (NBSK) that best suits your process and end product.

Botnia Hardwood Pulp

Botnia Hardwood pulp source: Birch wood

Bleached Hardwood Kraft Pulp (BHKP) is commonly used in paperboards and specialty as well as coated and uncoated papers and tissue. In many applications hardwood pulp provides excellent strengths and surface properties. Metsä produces high-quality hardwood pulp under the Botnia brand at its pulp mills in Äänekoski and Husum. Metsä Fibre also sells eucalyptus bleached kraft pulp under the Cenibra Euca brand.

Botnia Hardwood Pulps consist of high-quality Nordic birch (betula verrucosa, betula pendula or betula pubescens) sustainably sourced and felled by Metsä Forest. All of the wood raw materials are 100% traceable to their source. Your Metsä Fibre contact would be more than happy to help you select the bleached hardwood kraft pulp (BHKP) that best suits your process and end product.

Botnia High Yield Pulp (BCTMP)

Pine forest in the winter

Bleached Chemi-Thermo Mechanical Pulp (BCTMP) is often utilised in the production of paperboard to provide higher bulk and stiffness. In e.g. printing papers higher brightness, bulk and smoothness can be achieved by replacing mechanical pulp with BCTMP. Metsä Fibre (in cooperation with Metsä Board) offers high yield TCF BCTMP pulp under the Botnia brand. The pulp is produced at the Metsä Board Kaskinen Mill in Finland.

What gives Botnia High Yield Pulps its excellent high yield and paper technical properties, is the bleaching process that has been designed to preserve the wood’s natural lignin intact. Each Botnia High Yield pulp has been tailor-made to best suit specific end uses from coated speciality papers to board and tissue. Each pulp product consists of 60-100% hardwood, with the remaining 0-40% being of softwood. Your Metsä contact would be more than happy to help you select the BCTMP pulp that best suits your process and end product.

Other Bioproducts

In addition to the Botnia-branded pulp and biochemicals we produce and deliver, we are continuously developing and expanding our portfolio of bioproducts created from the side-streams of the pulp production process. Products such as biogas, biocomposites and fibre-based fabrics for example are already being developed together with partner companies.

Metsä Fibre is committed to utilising its wood raw materials as efficiently and diversely as possible. For instance, our mills produce enough bioenergy to meet their own process needs still leaving enough surplus to allow us to sell it into the national grid. The side-streams of the pulp production process open up a wide variety of opportunities for the extraction, refining and development of new and exciting bioproducts.

The new Bioproduct Mill in Äänekoski, Finland will become a benchmark for diverse bioproduct production and raw material efficiency upon its completion. An entire ecosystem of companies utilizing process side-streams to develop commercially viable bioproducts is being planned around the new mill site.
