​Paptic is a biobased, recyclable and renewable next generation packaging material made of sustainable wood fibre. Developed by a Finnish start-up company of the same name, Paptic is suitable for uses where plastic films have previously been the only alternative.

Enhancing the qualities of paper

Paptic can be produced on special paper production lines equipped with patented foam forming technology. The material is manufactured from long-fibre wood pulp, offering pleasing haptic properties, along with durability and strength characteristics commonly found in plastics. Excellent results have been achieved with high-quality raw material supplied by producers including Metsä Fibre.

Versatile and durable

Paptic is suitable for various uses, including carrier and dust bags, medical, cosmetic and e-commerce packaging, graphical applications, and technical end-uses. The durability of Paptic is due to its high tear resistance, fracture toughness and stretch. The material stretches up to 20%, compared to 5–7% in typical packaging papers. Its tear strength is 300% higher than paper. Paptic can be converted into products both with the plastic and paper converting machinery, but it can be also stitched like textiles, making it one of the most versatile materials in the market.

PAPTIC

Founded in 2015, Paptic Oy is a spin-off of the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, and its patented technology is based on VTT R&D work. Currently in the phase of conducting a feasibility study for upscaling its production, Paptic is looking into various alternative locations for an industrial scale demonstration plant. The company aims to begin production by the end of 2019, with an initial production target of 20,000 tonnes.
