Our sawn timber production process

Metsä Fibre is the biggest producer of sawn timber in Finland and we are the frontrunner in our industry. We use high-quality northern spruce and pine logs as the raw material for our products. Our production units are ideally located to source high quality raw material.

Metsä Fibre is committed to sustainability. We always know the origin of the wood we use, and over 90 per cent of the raw material we use comes from certified forests. Thanks to high-quality, long-term forest management, Finland’s forests are growing more than ever, sequestering carbon and producing high-quality raw material for sawn timber.

Control of the entire value chain

We work in close cooperation with Metsä Forest, which supplies all of the log wood we use. We supervise this wood supply efficiently and precisely, which gives us the ability to provide our customers with the exact products they have ordered, on schedule.

We have developed a value chain that extends from the forest to the end-user in an active and long-term manner. Thanks to our state-of-the-art wood supply management system, we can react to changes in the sawn timber market and still ensure that we meet our customers’ needs.

Our log sorting control is based on matrix management all the way from the forest to the customer. This system allows us to ensure that every log is cut as accurately as possible based on the trunk’s conversion value, as well as the length, diameter, and grade ordered by the customer.

We aim to be a frontrunner in the adoption of new solutions. We reform bravely and have invested in modern technology at our sawmills as part of the Sawmills of the Future concept.

Our sawmills employ shared operating models and, in the future, we will manage the production of all our units through the same user interface. This will make our operations more efficient and more cost-effective.

We identify the applications and raw materials that best suit each of our production units to ensure that we can make the most effective use of the wood’s properties and create added value for our customers.

We also employ cutting-edge technological solutions, such as 3D scanning and log X-ray equipment, as well as modern methods for drying quality management. These allow us to meet our customers’ wishes even more precisely. As Finland’s biggest producer of sawn timber, we can offer large-scale product packages and fulfil even the most demanding customer requirements smoothly.

We are known for the reliability of our deliveries. We have developed online services that let our customers track their deliveries in real time. Our efficient logistics solutions generate significant synergy benefits. The joint shipments of sawn timber and pulp to the Asian markets, for example, improve our competitiveness to a significant degree.

The best personnel

We invest strongly in the know-how of our personnel. At Metsä Fibre, our entire personnel are genuinely involved in the development of our operations, and it’s thanks to them that we can use the industry’s best practices at all of our production units. Our motivated and competent personnel give us a competitive advantage and ensure that we can provide our customers with high-quality services in all situations.

We operate resource-efficiently

We improve our operations continuously, in all areas. We pursue more efficient production models, which allow us to develop our cost and resource efficiency. We use 100 per cent of our wood raw material. The wood chips created as a sawmill side-stream are used in Metsä Fibre’s pulp production. The bark and sawdust are used in energy production, and the ashes can be used in earth moving and fertilisation.

The lifecycle of our sawn timber products is typically long and they are often used in construction, for example. This means that our products are ecological and meaningful, while also sequestering carbon.
