Experience in new duties

Job rotation is an effective approach to in-service learning at Metsä Fibre. The opportunity to tackle diverse challenges at various operating locations in Finland and abroad provides new perspectives over the business as a whole and helps our people to appreciate the needs of the customer.

Kustaa Laine is a graduate engineer with an evolving and diverse career. After serving as Technical Customer Service Manager at Metsä Fibre GmbH, he now takes on new responsibilities as Technical Sales Manager while remaining in Wiesbaden:

"Although the new job description still includes some of my previous duties, the main focus will now be on specific customer accounts and sales development. Metsä Fibre provides an exceptionally high standard of technical service, and my experience in customer service gives me a firm basis for sales work. My goal is to provide added value for customers by advising them on how to maximize the benefit that they derive from the technical characteristics of our products."

Kustaa Laine believes that job rotation and training will combine to provide a broad overview of the company's operations:

"The company actively supports its staffing personal development, with career paths incorporated into a development plan prepared for each employee. I have been preparing for my new duties by participating in company training events on how to manage sales and customer accounts."

JAAKKO ANTTILA APPOINTED VP, MILL MANAGER IN JOUTSENO

Jaakko Anttila, another graduate engineer who has been serving as Sales Director at Metsä Fibre GmbH in Wiesbaden, Germany, took up a new position at the beginning of March managing the Metsä Fibre mill in Joutseno, Finland. He feels that his experience working with customers in Wiesbaden provides a solid foundation for running mill operations and will help him understand how changes made at the mill affect customer processes:

"My goal is to enhance production and thereby ensure that the quality of our products is a better fit for the needs of customers. As demand for tissue paper grows, for example, we shall need pulp that grinds more readily and has better strength properties. This aim is supported by a new polysulfide cooking process in Joutseno that has enabled us to bring new products onto the market, with our Botnia Nordic Pine+ and Botnia Nordic Strong+ pulps already winning the Finnish Quality Innovation Award competition of Excellence Finland."

Other points of emphasis for Anttila in his new job will naturally be output efficiency, safety and environmental aspects:

"We differ from our competitors due to our comprehensive technical service package and innovative approach. Providing interdisciplinary career paths for our staff improves appreciation of the operation as a whole and makes us more proactive. It also gives us a more progressive and forward-looking business culture."

MARKO RUOTTINEN TAKES OVER AS MANAGER OF TECHNICAL CUSTOMER SERVICE AND SUSTAINABILITY IN ESPOO

Marko Ruottinen, MSc (Physics), has worked in customer service at Metsä Fibre for over a decade, most recently in Wiesbaden and previously at the Espoo office in Finland and at the company's mill in Äänekoski. He now returns to the Espoo office ready to apply the experience gained in his overseas posting.

While Ruottinen's customer service work will continue at his new home base, his job description will expand to include duties in sustainable development. He already has some previous experience of working in the Metsä Group sustainable development team:

"Sustainable development aspects of technical customer service, such as forest certification, product safety and environmental values, are an essential part of the job description. My mission in this new capacity is to help our customers as they tackle the sustainable development issues that increasingly crop up in their own customer relations. Despite this move, I hope that my customer contacts will bear in mind that I am still ready and willing to assist them."
