No person or company can enter a relationship and be trusted immediately. Trust takes years to be built. Over the past several years, we at Metsä Fibre have consistently made sure that our assets remain best in their class and that our offering continuously grows to meet market requirements. Our four modern pulp mills secure the reliability of supply to our customers and, in addition, the ownership of our sawmills enables us to find further wood sourcing synergies and increase the reliability of our deliveries. This August – exactly on schedule – the new mill in Äänekoski reached its nominal capacity. As for our Kemi mill, it is now coming to the end of its planned life cycle. Accordingly, a pre-study for renewing the mill has been announced.
Performing well, or indeed excellently in all our operations is a key element of our strategy. We need to make sure that we focus on relevant issues, strive for the best and most cost-efficient production, and that we have clear processes and measure them continuously for further improvement. These actions will help us in all markets. The pulp business is very much global, and what happens in Italy has an effect in Finland, while China affects all markets. However, the daily operational challenges are different in Finland compared to the rest of Europe and especially China.
Our new sales organisation addresses the fact that performing well in Europe requires other strengths than those needed in Asia. In Europe our efforts in the coming few years will be in further deepening our
cooperation with our key accounts by understanding better how we can together aim for more added value throughout the entire chain from the forest to European consumers – whether it’s a case of improvements in quality or processes, logistics or marketing, or sustainability.
With regards to sustainability, we are the heroes – to quote a competitor –as a European industry we need to start spreading the word and telling this story with pride. Sustainability offers us a competitive edge.
I sincerely believe that our industry as a whole has a great sustainable future. I trust you will agree, and I look forward to seeing you all in London.
