We use 100 per cent of our wood raw material

Resource efficiency

Resource efficiency is our way of operating. We use raw materials, energy and water as efficiently as possible. We use of every part of a tree for the purpose it is best suited for – logs are delivered to our sawmills while pulpwood is used for pulp, other bioproducts and further processing products. We also produce bioenergy from branches, treetops and bark. The chips produced as a side stream of sawing are used in Metsä Fibre’s pulp production.

We account for the natural qualities of wood from the moment the wood is harvested in the forest. For instance, the trunks arriving at our sawmills are cut in the forest in a manner that is optimal from the perspective of our customers’ needs and the end products. This allows us to make sure that the end products are of a high quality and that not even a splinter of this valuable raw material is wasted.
The bioproduct mill concept developed by Metsä Fibre enables the future expansion of our product range with new bioproducts that possess an increasingly high added value. The wood raw material and production side streams in the bioproduct mill concept are used in the form of various bioproducts, which can replace fossil-based materials and fossil fuels.

We have also found modern solutions for improving the company’s own resource efficiency in bioproducts. At the Äänekoski bioproduct mill, for example, the production of sulphuric acid from the mill’s odorous gases has expanded the mill’s closed chemicals cycle. It also minimises any sulphate discharges into the waterways. Metsä Fibre’s Joutseno mill and Äänekoski mill both produce product gas from bark. This product gas is used as a fossil-free fuel in the mills’ own processes. Our goal is for all of our mills to operate without fossil fuels in the future.

Continuous improvement is one of the cornerstones of our operations. Accordingly, we improve the production and resource efficiency of our pulp and sawmill businesses on a continuous basis. Resource-smart solutions are the direction we are heading in when planning new investments, in terms of both equipment and our products.
